Ladakh: the new Himalayan chic

Peter Hughes travelled to Ladakh, India with cazenove+loyd and stayed in luxuriously converted village houses which combined great comfort with a very special access to Himalayan village life 'Himalayan chic' as he describes it.

Peter walked in mountains, picnicked in orchards and rafted on the Zanskar River. Such is the variety and beauty of Ladakh's scenery. He stayed in a village house on the outskirts of Stok (population 260) looking up the valley to the peak of Stok Kangri (6120m). Small fields, enclosed by stone walls, contained tethered cows and white Buddhist stupas-mounds containing religious relics- plus wheat, barley and magpies.

Only Tibet has a greater concentration of Buddhist monasteries and is known as ‘Little Tibet' and experienced morning prayer at Thikse monastery with the resident lamas sounding conch shell trumpets from their balcony high above the Indus to announce the start of morning devotions.
