My c+l memory

The roof and sea bed of the world

Laura Jeffrey, Destination Expert.

One of the most inhospitable places on earth, temperatures in Ladakh during the freezing winters regularly plummet to below -40°, but during our summer the region is warm and sunny. This is the very region where the Indo-Australian and the Eurasion plates collided to create the youngest mountain range in the world - the Himalayas - and you can even see the old sea bed. The drive from the small village of Nimoo to the even smaller, aptly-named village of Chilling is the most spectacular and breathtaking route I have ever seen by a country mile. An impossibly perched road, cut into what is essentially a canyon, winds its way along the Sanskar River along terrain from another world and affords an incredible insight into the amazing rock formations that make this region so spectacular.
