My c+l memory

Riding across rural Rajasthan

Alex Townsend, Destination Expert

My previous encounter astride a horse was an unforgettable experience...galloping uncontrollably across the English countryside on an over-excited stallion which terminated with the rider (myself) thrown several feet, head first, to a concrete landing. ‘Never again' I said!

Only a few months later I found myself confronted with the prospect of spending an afternoon riding across rural Rajasthan. Memories of my recent incident came flashing back, but when would I be offered such a rare opportunity as this again? Mustering up all my courage, I mounted a beautiful Marwari horse. Clare and I were accompanied by a private guide, whose experience and professional yet relaxed approach immediately made me feel at ease. We left the beautiful village of Rohet and trotted out into the Rajasthani countryside. I promptly swallowed my nerves and comfortably sat back in my saddle as we cantered into the wilderness, abundant with black buck and blue bill antelope. Presently we passed through small tribal settlements that welcomed us with beaming faces and proudly gave us the ‘grand tour' of their mud huts - a real insight into the simplicity of the Bishnoi's lifestyle and generous hospitality.
