Moroccan convert
Henrietta Loyd, Destination Expert.
I am now a total Moroccan convert! Since we started sending clients there a couple of years ago, I had been once and wasn't that fussed but now having been quite a few times, I love it.
A three hour flight is nothing nowadays and especially when it transports one into such a difficult world of hustle, bustle and more importantly warmth.
That is what Christopher and I thought when we took the whole office to Marrakech in February of this year. A perfect place for a long weekend incorporating all of the above. Our chosen Riad, like many in the Medina, had a fantastic roof top garden with far reaching views over the city. What more spectacular spot could one choose for breakfast as the sun comes up and the call to prayer is all around. Shopping was naturally a big pull but so was a journey into the desert, some gentle walking followed by a delicious picnic lunch. To get into the foothills of the Atlas Mountains is a mere one hour journey and once there, one is transported into wild rugged scenery seemingly a million miles away from Marrakech.
On a further visit in June to run a birthday celebration for a client, we were in the steeply contrasting environs of the Palmerie, a green desert oasis only 15 minutes from the Medina and all Marrakech has to offer. From there we went to the desert for a spectacular picnic lunch set up in true Berber style and the climax was a tented camp and dinner we created again in the desert with no blemish to the huge North African sky except for the stars stretching as far as we could see.
What am I trying to say - Morocco is the perfect short haul destination and February is a great time to go if our visit was anything to go by.
