My c+l memory

In for a treat

Alexandra Townsend, Destination Expert.

My journey to the first Maldivian island began by seaplane.  I passed over turquoise lagoons resembling oversized swimming pools, surrounding exotic islands.

From the moment I stepped onto the white sand beach, and felt the grains between my toes, I knew I was in for a treat.  Wherever I ventured I was greeted with beaming smiles and extensive knowledge from the attentive staff.

Not only are there gorgeous ivory shores and azure waters, but unique beach villas and over-water villas on each island all with individual character.

My stay featured an unusual series of interactions with the underwater world. From snorkelling with reef sharks to watching, stingrays being hand-fed...a true realisation, whereby my terror of this marine life turned into a fascination of both species. After hearing stories of such ‘predators' in the area I was nervous of venturing into the ocean. However I was soon reassured, when I saw that the black/white tipped sharks were so minute, surrounded by plenty of tasty fish and obviously posing no threat to me. Admittedly this didn't stop the rush of adrenaline when I came within inches of one, only shielded by my snorkelling mask; my heart did skip a few beats. But the beauty of watching it swiftly swim amongst the colourful coral and vibrant smaller fish was picturesque.

The stingrays, all suitably nick-named, arrived at the beach for feeding time. The largest female, aptly named ‘Big Mama', was fascinating to watch as she and her family surrounded the marine biologists in the water, occasionally displaying their white bellies in reaction to their human friends' presence. Each with individual character and natural traits they were captivating to watch.
