Gringo rhythm
Christopher Wilmot-Sitwell, destination expert.
As a lover of ‘World Music', no destination could be more rewarding than Brazil. I have always found it very satisfying that, even at two in the morning, the clubs of Rio's Lapa District have live bands playing to an audience of lots of different ages. And that the ‘beautiful young' are just as happy to listen to Bossa Nova as to rock. Music is not just an option in Brazil, it is everywhere.
The music of Bahia, however, is straight out of West Africa as are most of the percussion instruments used. I really wanted to understand it a bit more and find a way for our clients to do so also. We have now accessed one of Bahia's most accomplished percussionists- Giba Conceicao- to host drumming workshops for our clients in his studio in downtown Salvador.
A really involving experience and rather like the ‘older' dancers in clubs of Lapa I felt that my Gringo Rhythm was accepted not just tolerated.
