Exploring a different world not on foot

I was told the best way of seeing an extensive amount of this fragile yet desperately harsh environment was by quad bike of all things - so I took to the tracks armed with a very hot large helmet which my safety conscious guide said I must wear, even though I looked more like a granny going shopping at my bumbling pace as opposed to a charlie's angel! Every turn on the sandy track framed an even better view than before. I brought myself to a grounding halt on my quad bike on the top of a small sand dune to admire the breathtaking view of the Hartmann's valley.
The sky is a soft hazy blue and the late afternoon sun has turned the grass which was a recent result of the strong rains, to a beautiful shimmery gold blanket across the rolling hills beyond. Through the sparser patches of grass the fiery coloured sand peers through and a lone goat from the local Himba village wonders into the picture. There may not be game in this area to see, but who needs lions when you have a magical world like this to explore.
